Have you ever noticed the uniquely shaped bells hanging from shepherd’s crooks that dot the highways of California? The story of how they began in the early 20th century, and the remarkable woman responsible not just for their design but their creation, is one that continues to resonate to this day.

Phyllis Hansen will bring “The Bell Lady,” Mrs. A.S.C. Forbes, to life. She will recount stories of Mrs. Forbes’ remarkable life and legacy as a true Renaissance Women who was an author, historian, designer, businesswoman, foundry-founder, activist and legendary photographer. Phyllis will provide updates to information she previously presented. She will also share several unique artifacts from the estate of Mrs. Forbes.

The Andres Pico Adobe is proud to have one of the original bells in our courtyard. Phyllis Hansen is a California historian. She has been on the Board of Directors of the SFVHS for over 10 years, and is also on the Board of the Campo de Cahuenga and past Board member of The Ebell of LA. Join us for our program on the amazing Mrs. Forbes and her fascinating part of California history!
