November 18th at 7:00 p.m. - at New Life of the Nazarene Church.
Daisy Herrera recently embarked on a journey to learn about the lives of the souls buried at Pioneer Cemetery, then known as the Morningside Center, by researching the Society’s collection of more than 500 death certificates. Active from 1893 to 1939, it is one of the oldest cemeteries in the San Fernando Valley. The documents hold vast amounts of information, providing us with glimpses of everyday life during those years. She will share the patterns of migration, the disastrous effects of various diseases, dangerous labor practices, and the ravaging consequences of the Great Depression. Join us for this unique presentation as she shares a glimpse of life-and death in the Valley during that time.
Former SFVHS Board member, Daisy R. Herrera, is a Ph.D. student in the History Department at UC Riverside. Her research focuses on the Civil Rights Movements and ethnic coalitions in the San Fernando Valley in the 1960s-1970s. Born and raised in Sun Valley, Daisy currently lives in Tarzana.
