March 23rd - Karina Dunbar Presents the History of Fort Tejon

On Thursday, March 23rd, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Karina (Mooradian) Dunbar will talk about the history of Fort Tejon, a former U.S. Army outpost in Lebec, California used from 1854-1864. Karina currently serves as President of the Fort Tejon Historical Association (FTHA) and Chair of the Board. She has attended nearly every historic event, Civil War reenactment and Dragoon Day program on site. Karina also serves as an American Civil War reenactor, participating in Civil War Events throughout Southern California, when she’s available from her day job as a paralegal, specializing in Bankruptcy and carries an undergrad degree in Criminal Justice Administration. This event is free and open to the public at the New Life Church, 10650 Reseda Boulevard, Porter Ranch, CA. There will be a free door prize drawing and light refreshments. Parking is free. Donations are encouraged and greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to Hannah Almstead, Dr. Richard Doyle, and Joyce Gaynor on their re-election to the San Fernando Valley Board of Directors, and also welcome to our newest Board members Mary Neubauer, Jim Rowerdink, Michael Sesma and Maria Wessenauer. These dedicated folks will be serving two year terms and will be installed at the March speaker meeting.

Save the Date: Monday, May 29, 2017 for Memorial Day at Pioneer Cemetery

Join the San Fernando Valley Historical Society for a heart-felt hometown Memorial Day Observance at the historic San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar from 11 a.m. to Noon on Monday, May 29, 2017. The cemetery is located at 14451 Bledsoe Street at the corner of Foothill Boulevard. The observance will include a rifle salute, U.S. flag-raising, and "Taps," and is conducted by community groups including the Marine Corps League, San Fernando Detachment #1277 and Boy Scout Troop 104, Mission Hills. There will be limited parking at the rear of the cemetery, so please carpool, if possible, and come early for the best seating.
