October 23rd Meeting: "Speaking of Pioneers: the Historic Artwork of Orpha Klinker"

Please join us on Thursday, October 23rd as Phyllis Hansen shares with us the legacy of local 20th century artist Orpha Klinker. Among other subjects, Klinker painted the California Ranchos and Adobes, (which includes our own Andres Pico Adobe.) Phyllis will show images of some of these Klinker works, and favorite pieces from her personal collection, which includes 1920s fashion illustrations created during Orpha's early advertising career. Coincidentally, Phyllis, who is a member of the Board of the San Fernando Valley Historical Society, has followed in many of Klinker's footsteps. An artist, author, writer in the advertising world and history enthusiast, she also serves, as Orpha did, on the Board of the Campo de Cahuenga where four of Klinker's most famous portraits are permanently exhibited. Happily, Ms. Klinker also resides on her family tree. This event, which starts at 7 p.m., will be held at the New Life Church which is located on the corner of Chatsworth Street and Reseda Boulevard in Porter Ranch. There will also be a free door prize drawing and refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Join us at the Archives Bazaar – October 25th

Come visit the SFVHS at the Los Angeles Archives Bazaar! The Ninth Annual Archives Bazaar will be held on Saturday, October 25th from 9 am until 5 pm at the Doheny Memorial Library on the campus of USC, University Park. Come experience the diversity of stories that make Southern California such a place of discovery. A broad array of institutions and archives will have experts on hand to show off their collections and answer questions – from the Autry National Center of the American West and the Los Angeles Public Library to private collectors whose materials fill the gaps left in the region's history. In all, more than 70 archives, including the San Fernando Valley Historical Society, will be represented at this free event, which is open to the public. In addition, the bazaar will feature an archives roadshow, where anyone can bring historic photos or documents from home that they want scanned. USC is minutes from downtown Los Angeles and is easily accessible by major freeways, and the new Metro Expo line. Doheny Library is located in the center of campus, adjacent to Alumni Park and across from Bovard Auditorium, on Trousdale Avenue.

Andres Pico Adobe

The Andres Pico Adobe is one of the oldest residences in the City of Los Angeles. It represents a bygone era and the rich historical past of the San Fernando Valley. Inside are museum displays of native American beads, Mission and Spanish-Mexican era artifacts, costumes and clothing that span more than a century, and furniture from the Victorian era, when the Adobe was home to members of the Pico family.
