"Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Story"

December 7, 2011 marks the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and our country’s expeditious entry into World War II. Of an estimated 60,000 men and women in the military stationed on Oahu that day, only a few thousand survive today.

The San Fernando Valley Historical Society is honored to announce that a survivor of that fateful day will be our guest speaker on Thursday, January 26, 2012. H. H. "Curly" Elliott was assigned to the USS Lexington CV2. On December 1, 1941, Curly was put ashore at Pearl Harbor to repair planes damaged at sea during practice lan
dings.

On December 5, Admiral Kimmel sent the USS Lexington with a task force under Rear Admiral Newton to deliver 25 scout bombers to Midway Island. Curly was still at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and remained there until his ship returned.

Be sure to mark your calendar to come and hear first hand from someone who was there. Our meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Adobe. And, please remember to personally thank all veterans and all current members of military forces for their service to our country.

Andres Pico Adobe

The Andres Pico Adobe is one of the oldest residences in the City of Los Angeles. It represents a bygone era and the rich historical past of the San Fernando Valley. Inside are museum displays of native American beads, Mission and Spanish-Mexican era artifacts, costumes and clothing that span more than a century, and furniture from the Victorian era, when the Adobe was home to members of the Pico family.
