Mission Hills, CA - Noted Victoriana expert Marilyn Block will present an unusual program of "Victorian Mourning Customs" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2003 at the Andres Pico Adobe, 10940 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills. Sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Historical Society, this event is free and open to the general public, and Halloween-themed refreshments will be served.
Block's presentation will encompass her personal research of Victorian funeral customs as well as her collection of mourning memorabilia dating to the reign of Queen Victoria. The era parallels the same time period when life at the Adobe was in its heyday. It also is the same era when the San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar was founded (which is now a Society preservation project).
Block is a member of the Victorian Society of the Fullerton Arboretum, and is a docent for its 1894 Victorian home. In 1999, she portrayed Queen Victoria for the Society's holiday event. In addition, she is a member of the Victorian Tea Society of the Discovery Museum of Santa, and frequently gives and makes appearances at Victorian-style tea parties.
In the past, Block has shared her findings with such diverse groups as church congregations, hospital grief counselors, the Ebell Club of Fullerton, Daughters of the American Revolution, and many other historic organizations throughout Southern California.
Depending upon weather conditions, Block's presentation will be held in the lovely courtyard of the 169-year-old landmark Andres Pico Adobe, located at Sepulveda and Brand Boulevards (directly across from the Mission Hills Annex of the U.S. Post Office).
