Mission Hills, CA -The "History of Country Music in the Valley" will headline the San Fernando Valley Historical Society's monthly program meeting at 7:30 p.m. on June 26, 2003 at the Andres Pico Adobe, 10940 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills. This evening also commemorates the Society's founding on July 4, 1943, and special 60th anniversary refreshments will be served. Admission is free, and the general public is welcome.
Presented by local resident and musician Kirby Pringle, the fascinating program will explore the unmistakable mark on country music of the Valley's "singing cowboys," including Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Tex Williams, Wesley Tuttle, Merle Travis, and Hank Penny. Slides interspersed with musical selections will round out the presentation.
A native of Chatsworth, Pringle grew up near the filming locations of many popular Western television shows, such as "Gunsmoke" and "Zorro." As a little boy, he admired these cowboys and their mystique. In later years, as a touring/recording musician, he discovered country music while researching the roots of the rock'n'roll genre.
Pringle holds a B.A. in history, and is currently studying history in the masters program at California State University at Northridge, where he is working on the San Fernando Valley Digital Library Project. In the summer of 2001, he participated in a Texas A&M University underwater excavation in Galveston Bay on the Civil War blockade-runner called the Denbigh.
The program will be held at the Andres Pico Adobe, which serves as the headquarters for the San Fernando Valley Historical Society, celebrating its 60th anniversary year. The Andres Pico Adobe is one of the oldest adobe homes in the City of Los Angeles, and is a national, state and city landmark. It is located in Andres Pico Adobe Park at the curved intersection of Brand and Sepulveda Boulevards (directly across from the Mission Hills Annex of the U.S. Post Office).
