Mission Hills, CA - Lockheed's early days in Burbank and Valley woman pilot Amelia Earhart will be the focus at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 as the San Fernando Valley Historical Society welcomes Gil Cefaratt to the Andres Pico Adobe, 10940 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills, to discuss these important highlights of Valley history.
A native Valley Angeleno, Cefaratt will weave the history of Lockheed and Amelia Earhart with his own experiences during one of the most exciting periods in aviation history, much of which occurred in Burbank and the San Fernando Valley.
In the summer of 1944, Cefaratt worked at Lockheed on P-38 wings. He enlisted in the Navy, and was called back to Lockheed more than three years after his tour of duty ended. He was enrolled in the company's first electronics course, became a radio/electronics technician for engineering flight tests, and a technical rep supporting Lockheed airplanes. Thereafter, he became a technical writer.
During this time, Cefaratt became involved and interested in Lockheed's airplanes and history, as well as Valley aviation history. He founded and was president of the P-38 National Convention, which later formed the ongoing P-38 National Association.
In addition, Cefaratt belongs to 17 different P-38 Associations, the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Assn., the P-47 Thunderbolt Pilots Assn., two 8th Air Force societies, the Blackbird Assn., the F-117 Stealth Fighter Assn., the Amelia Earhart Statue Bronzing Project, Lockheed Management Retirees, and two Navy ships associations.
The program will be held at the Andres Pico Adobe, which serves as the headquarters for the San Fernando Valley Historical Society, celebrating its 60th anniversary year. The Andres Pico Adobe is one of the oldest adobe homes in the City of Los Angeles, and is a national, state and city landmark. It is located in Andres Pico Adobe Park at the curved intersection of Brand and Sepulveda Boulevards (directly across from the Mission Hills Annex of the U.S. Post Office).
