Las Posadas Re-enactment

Saturday, December 13th at 5:00 p.m.

Andres Pico Adobe,
10940 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills  Map

Free to the public

Mission Hills, CA - For the third consecutive year, the 169-year-old landmark Andres Pico Adobe will be the staging site for Las Posadas, a traditional Christmas pageant that re-enacts Maryís and Joseph's search for shelter in Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus. The re-enactment will occur at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2003 in Andres Pico Adobe Park, 10940 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills (across from the Mission Hills Post Office at Sepulveda and Brand Boulevards).

Sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Historical Society (SFVHS) in conjunction with Santa Rosa Catholic Church of San Fernando and the San Fernando Valley Latino Arts Council, this community event is free and open to the general public. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Las Posadas, a unique Mexican custom, features a procession with lighted candles that follows the characters of "Mary and Joseph" from door to door as they are refused lodging for the night. With each refusal, a traditional song is sung, and the couple wearily moves on to another inn seeking shelter. Finally, they come to rest in a stable for farm animals where Jesus is born and swaddled in a feeding trough, or manger. Afterward, there is a celebration with hot chocolate, pan dulce (Mexican pastries) and a pinata-breaking party.

Visitors may participate in the procession with lighted candles, which will be available from SFVHS for $1. Children are encouraged to dress as shepherds or farm animals. Prior to the procession at 4 p.m. a free workshop will be held for children to learn how to make piŇatas and other Christmas decorations.

"The adobe's many entrances and its graceful Early California architecture make it a perfect setting for this most beautiful Christmas event," said Jim Gulbranson, SFVHS president. "We invite all members of the community to come and share an evening dedicated to the spirit of the holidays."
