The San Fernando Valley Historical Society (SFVHS) will sponsor a special "Las Posadas" re-enactment at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15 2002 at the historic Andres Pico Adobe, 10940 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills. The holiday event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
Las Posadas re-enacts the journey of Mary and Joseph as they search for shelter in Bethlehem before Jesus’ birth. The 168-year old Adobe, with its many entrances, will serve as the various inn doors where Mary and Joseph sought quarters for the night. The audience follows the characters from door-to-door as they are turned away by various innkeepers, then eventually come to rest in a stable with the farm animals. Traditional songs accompany each refusal.
This year’s event is coordinated by volunteers from the Santa Rosa Catholic Church in San Fernando. Workshops for children and families will start around 4 p.m. to make traditional Las Posadas decorations. Visitors may participate in the procession with lighted candles, available at minimal cost from the SFVHS, and guiding "Mary and Joseph" from door to door. Children are encouraged to participate by dressing as shepherds or paper-bag farm animals. Afterward, hot chocolate and holiday treats will be served, and a piñata smashing will ensue.
The historic Andres Pico Adobe is the second oldest adobe home in the City of Los Angeles and is a registered national, state and city landmark. The home was once owned by Andres Pico, brother of Pio Pico, the last official governor of Mexican-ruled California. The Adobe is located in the park at the curved intersection of Sepulveda and Brand Boulevards (across from the Mission Hills Annex of the U.S. Post Office).
