The San Fernando Valley Historical Society is recognized as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation under the federal Internal Revenue Service Code.
This designation means that SFVHS is exempt from federal income tax, qualifies for lower postage rates, and that many charitable contributions to SVFHS may also qualify as tax deductions, whether given as monetary donations or appraised artifacts/items given to the museum collection.
When a donation is made, the value of the donation is recorded and a letter of acknowledgement is sent to the donor providing proof of both the gift and its value. This information can then be submitted by the donor as a charitable deduction for income tax filing purposes.
SFVHS is restricted in how it operates in order to keep its non-profit status. For example, it is prevented from discriminating against anyone applying for membership; from distributing political or religious material unrelated to its purpose as an organization; and from any type of fund-raising that serves to create excess profit that is distributed to the membership, officers or directors.
SFVHS is allowed to accept grants, as well as gifts from estates and trusts.
